In just a short few years, application development has taken center stage—in many cases, surpassing the more traditional website as a way to connect and share information. With the resulting upsurge of new app development tools, the influx of IoT connectivity, and the explosion of smartphones, it follows that 2016 will be the year of the mobile app.

The relatively new pervasiveness of smartphones means that the power to both create and utilize apps in daily life is literally in the palm of our hands. More than ever, it’s crucial for developers to stay ahead of the pack when creating or fine-tuning their next app.

Below are five of the top mobile app trends we can expect to see this year:

  • More apps developed for the “digital mesh” – Gartner defines the “digital mesh” as the conglomerate “expansion of devices, other people, information and services that are fluidly and dynamically interconnected.” By allowing an increased level of connectivity, apps and services can better meet users’ requirements as they evolve.  And, according to Forbes, the digital mesh also “brings together the many information sources, devices, apps, services and microservices into a flexible architecture in which apps extend across multiple endpoint devices and can coordinate with one another to produce a continuous digital experience.”
  • Real-time A/B testing – Google Play recently announced changes to how developers can control and customize their apps in the Play Store, including the addition of A/B testing—sometimes known as split testing. In short, this testing phase lets developers determine the descriptive words, icons and keywords that garner the most traffic, according to TheNextWeb.
  • Automated price changes – New programs allow application developers to monitor performance, thereby prompting them to change app prices based on user data and demand, TheNextWeb reports.
  • Overall increase in relevance and prevalence – “In this day and age, any company worth its salt is expected to have a mobile app. This mentality has led some major companies to release apps that were clearly not ready for prime time, but that’s done nothing to stop this trend from barreling forward,” Daniel Bukszpan wrote in Fortune.
  • Larger focus on industry – “Apps with an industry focus—as opposed to those used primarily for gaming and entertainment—are steadily gaining market share. This year, we can expect to see more of a focus on apps for healthcare, restaurants, manufacturing and others,” says Heather Clancy of Fortune.
