Webinar recap: Virtual Big Room Planning
How to stay agile in a remote work environment
In my recently hosted webinar, “Virtual Big Room Planning: How to stay agile in a remote work environment,” I presented alongside Marcus Greenwood, Director of Wireless Device Engineering at Charter Communications, on the key factors for remote facilitation of Big Room Planning (BRP). We discussed how to repurpose the SAFe method, a scaled agile framework for enterprises to align large development efforts to business objectives, for WFH teams. Through the use of fun digital tools and expert facilitation to ensure tactical outcomes are achieved, PK helped Charter successfully and remotely come together to plan for the future.
As we continue to social distance, companies find themselves struggling to keep their teams engaged and productive. BRP is a 2-3 day “all hands” (business, product and technology) agile event that happens each quarter to forecast and commit to feature delivery work. In the past, BRP events were usually held in-person and gathered people from across the company in a single room. A WFH world has turned that model on its head, which is why we’ve developed Virtual Big Room Planning (VBRP).
At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, Charter’s mid-size Wireless Device Engineering team had been facilitating BRP sessions for about a year and a half and wanted to continue using the same structure virtually. By leveraging helpful tools such as Sococo and a PI Planning App, Charter was able to structure the event similarly to how they would have interacted onsite and partaken in activities, including sprint planning, retrospectives and confidence votes.
We also touched upon how practitioners can ensure readiness for VBRP, which includes agreeing on their definition of readiness, having organizational goals and content in place and implementing virtual capabilities. Pre-work and post-work preparation are necessary for a successful event, and the webinar goes in-depth on what practitioners should focus on during these stages.
